To make a day of it

Schloss Friedelhausen stands in Lollar (Landkreis Gießen), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Schloss Friedelhausen stands on the banks of the Lahn, between Marburg and Gießen, on an estate founded in 1564 by Friedrich von Rolshausen. Owned by the von Schwerin family of Londorf, the property has been leased since 1982 to an association that runs it as a residential and working community based on anthroposophy and biodynamic farming. It is therefore not a conventional show castle but a working farm and social estate, home to disabled and non-disabled residents alike. Visits are built around this everyday life, through educational farm tours rather than a purely architectural tour.

What to know

  • The estate is mainly visited through guided group tours booked in advance.
  • The visiting season generally starts in April.
  • The castle interior is not open for free individual visits, as the site functions primarily as a residential and working community.
  • Farm produce can be bought at the Dorfladen in the neighbouring village of Ruttershausen.
  • Schloss Friedelhausen is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Hesse.
