To make a day of it

Schauenburg stands in Oberkirch (Ortenaukreis), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Recorded dating: 11th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Schauenburg Castle rises on a rocky spur above Gaisbach, a district of Oberkirch, overlooking the Rench valley. Built in the 11th century by Duke Berthold II of Zähringen, the ruin passed through several noble families, including the Ebersteins and later the Barons of Schauenburg, who still own it today. Visitors can still make out two partly preserved residential towers, a gate tower, remnants of the ring wall and outer bailey, and the remains of a chapel attached to a shield wall.
