The Burg Hohengeroldseck is a ruined castle standing on the Schönberg hill above Seelbach, between the Schutter and Kinzig valleys. Built around 1250 by Walther I von Geroldseck to replace an earlier stronghold on the Rauhkasten, it became the seat of the Geroldseck family, whose lands were later divided among heirs and fought over for centuries. Burned by French troops in 1689, the castle has remained a ruin ever since, with partial restoration work carried out since the late 19th century. Visitors today find sections of wall, a tower and remains of the great hall, overlooking the Ortenau region.
