To make a day of it

Schanze Wagesenberg stands in Pöttmes (Landkreis Aichach-Friedberg), in Bavaria, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Schanze Wagesenberg is an early medieval earthwork fortification located in the Ebenried forest near Pöttmes, in Bavaria. This extensive system of ramparts and ditches, laid out on a kidney shaped plateau roughly 300 by 190 metres, shows the typical features of a stronghold built to hold off Hungarian raids in the 10th century. Immediately nearby lie the remains of a high medieval motte, along with traces of much older settlement dating back to the Bronze Age and the Hallstatt period. This is not a built castle but an open air archaeological site, still readable in the shape of the ground.

What to know

  • The site is visited outdoors, within the Ebenried forest, with no building or standing structure to see.
  • Reading the remains takes some attention, since they consist of earthworks (banks and ditches) rather than walls.
  • No opening hours, fees or visitor facilities are indicated for this site.
  • The forest setting calls for sturdy footwear suited to walking on natural terrain.
  • The neighbouring motte (Burgstall Wagesenberg) can be visited as part of the same walk.
