To make a day of it
Schloss Blumenthal stands in Aichach (Landkreis Aichach-Friedberg), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Schloss Blumenthal stands on the banks of the Ecknach river, between the hamlet of Klingen and the pilgrimage site of Maria Birnbaum. Founded by the Teutonic Order as early as the 13th century, it was once a moated castle with four wings, largely torn down in the 19th century by the Fugger counts, who kept only the south wing with its baroque chapel. Today the site is home to a communal, ecological living project, where the old brewery building, the beer garden and St Mary's chapel still remain.
What to know
- The site is now inhabited and run by a housing cooperative, not a conventional museum castle.
- Visitors can see the castle chapel of St Mary, the old brewery building and the beer garden.
- A hotel and restaurant occupy part of the buildings.
- No visiting hours or admission fees are available, as this is a living community rather than a site with a fixed tour.
- The 17th century St George's tower stands nearby, to the east of the site.
