To make a day of it

Ruine Brandenfels stands in Herleshausen (Werra-Meißner-Kreis), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Ruine Brandenfels stands on a spur of the Schloßberg in the Ringgau hills, near Markershausen, a hamlet belonging to the municipality of Herleshausen. Built in the mid 13th century, it was long shared among several co-owning noble families before passing entirely to the Treusch von Buttlar in 1550. What remains traces an irregular quadrangular layout, guarded on the west and north by carved ditches, with the steep slope of the hill protecting the other sides. Across the Werra valley, in Thuringia, the related ruin of the Brandenburg can be seen from the heights nearby.
