To make a day of it

Boyneburg stands in Sontra (Werra-Meißner-Kreis), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Boyneburg stands as a ruin atop a limestone ridge in the Ringgau hills, within the municipality of Sontra. What remains of the medieval stronghold are mainly two walls of the pentagonal keep, about twenty metres high, along with foundation remnants and the ditches that once shielded the outer bailey. The site is notable for its imperial past: Frederick Barbarossa stayed here several times in the twelfth century, holding court and an imperial diet on the hill. The property still belongs to the von Boyneburg family, whose name has been linked to the castle since the early Middle Ages.
