To make a day of it

Römerschanze (Grünwald) stands in Grünwalder Forst (Landkreis München), in Bavaria, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Römerschanze is a group of earthwork fortifications in the Grünwalder Forst, on the high plateau above the Isar river a few kilometres south of Grünwald. The site preserves traces of a Roman watch post along the road linking Augsburg and Salzburg, an earthen rampart raised in the early medieval period during the Hungarian invasions, and a small later residence built inside the older enclosure. Visitors can still make out several curved ramparts and their ditches cut into the promontory above the Georgenstein rock.

What to know

  • The site is an open-air archaeological remain, freely accessible, with no building or ticket office on the spot.
  • The terrain follows a wooded promontory cut by several ditches and earth ramparts, so sturdy footwear and care are advisable.
  • Finds from the site, including Roman coins, are displayed at the Burgmuseum Grünwald rather than on location.
  • Access is on foot via the forest paths of the Grünwalder Forst, some distance from the village of Grünwald.
