To make a day of it

Ringwall Hünenkeller stands in Lengefeld (Korbach) (Landkreis Waldeck-Frankenberg), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Ringwall Hünenkeller is a former early medieval ring rampart set on a wooded hill at the edge of the Lengefelder Holz, west of Lengefeld, a district of Korbach. Oval and horseshoe shaped, open to the south, it still shows parts of the eastern rampart and wall remains near the southern entrance, along with ground hollows marking collapsed cellars. Excavations carried out between 1962 and 1974 shed light on the site's history. Visitors today mostly reach it on forest walking paths, drawn by its quiet, half hidden earthworks rather than by any standing building.

What to know

  • The site lies in woodland on a hilltop about three kilometres west of Korbach and can be visited freely.
  • No structure survives above ground; visitors see remains of ramparts, wall fragments and hollows in the ground.
  • Reaching the site means walking along forest paths, so sturdy footwear and some walking are needed.
  • The site is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Germany.
  • Nearby, in the village of Lengefeld, stands the former moated castle with its manor house, which can be combined with the visit.
