To make a day of it

Ringwall Hallgarter Zange stands in Hallgarten (Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Ringwall Hallgarter Zange is a dry stone enclosure built on a secondary summit of the Rheingau hills, at 525 metres above sea level, away from the village of Hallgarten. Its layout does not follow the terrain in an advantageous way, which led Karl August von Cohausen, who first recorded it in 1879, to suggest it may have served as a refuge fortification connected to Kloster Eberbach. No excavation has ever confirmed this theory. The site, now overgrown with young conifer forest, survives only as scattered sections of wall.
