To make a day of it

Burg Scharfenstein stands in Kiedrich (Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 13th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Burg Scharfenstein today consists of a single 28 metre keep, standing on a rocky spur above the vineyards of the Rheingau between Kiedrich and Hausen vor der Höhe. Built in the 13th century as an archiepiscopal seat, the castle gradually lost its surrounding buildings, leaving only this massive tower with walls three metres thick. A modern metal staircase now replaces the original drawbridge access, leading up through stone stairs to the former battlement, now used as a viewing platform over the vineyard slopes.
