To make a day of it

Burg Crass stands in Eltville am Rhein (Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Crass stands on the bank of the Rhine in Eltville am Rhein, at the edge of town toward Walluf, and is considered the oldest surviving building in the town. Dendrochronological analysis has shown that some of its timber dates back to 1096, on a site that may once have held a Roman villa. Over the centuries the property passed through many forms, from a free manor to a noble residence and later a neo-Gothic estate known as Schloss Rheinberg, before becoming an inn in the nineteenth century. After extensive restoration, it now houses a hotel and an upscale restaurant with a terrace overlooking the river.

What to know

  • The building now operates as a hotel and restaurant, not as a museum open for general sightseeing.
  • The riverside terrace, called Crassgarten, is open to the public as part of the restaurant.
  • The site is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Hesse.
  • There are no opening hours or admission fees, since there is no formal monument visit.
