The Burg Obernburg stands in ruins atop the Schlossberg, a basalt cone overlooking the town of Gudensberg in the Schwalm-Eder-Kreis. Founded around the early twelfth century by the counts of the Hessengau, it survived several sieges and feuds before being looted and destroyed by Napoleonic troops in 1806. What remains today are sections of wall, the stump of the keep and the gatehouse, repaired through a series of restoration efforts. Since 2006 the site has also been used as an open-air exhibition space for art.
