To make a day of it

Nonnenfels stands in Bad Dürkheim (Landkreis Bad Dürkheim), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Nonnenfels is a small ruin set on a rocky spur of the Schlawiesener Berg, in the Palatinate Forest west of Bad Dürkheim. What remains are mostly features cut directly into the rock, door frames, beam holes, steps, and a block thought to have served as a stone altar, rather than standing walls. Who built it and exactly when is unknown, since quarrying and rockfalls have erased much of the evidence. The place is tied to a local legend about Adelinde, daughter of the Count of Leiningen, said to have withdrawn here as a nun after losing her love.

What to know

  • The ruin is freely accessible at any time, with no ticket or opening hours.
  • A hikers' car park lies below, to the east of the site.
  • The Nonnenfels sits on the Saar-Rhein-Main long-distance trail.
  • No standing walls remain, only features carved into the rock itself, worth a close look.
  • Reaching it means a moderate walk up a wooded rocky spur.
