To make a day of it
Motte Haidenschloss stands in Gefrees (Landkreis Bayreuth), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.
The Motte Haidenschloss, also known as Burgstall Rauschenberg, is the remnant of a vanished fortification at the foot of the Rauschenberg near Gefrees in Bavaria. What remains is an oval flattened mound roughly 20 by 25 metres, bordered by a ditch on the mountain side. No standing structure has survived, so visitors come to read the shape of the earthworks rather than to see any masonry. The site sits on a spur above the Kornbach stream, away from any nearby settlement.
What to know
- The site is freely accessible at any time, with no opening hours or ticket.
- No built structure remains visible, only a mound and a ditch shaped into the ground.
- It is reached on foot from Gefrees, about 1.5 kilometres away, via a path climbing toward the Rauschenberg.
- No construction date is documented; the only historical mention, from a 1536 register, already describes it as abandoned.
- The ground is uneven and partly crossed by a modern water pipe, so some care is needed when walking around.
