To make a day of it
Altes Schloss der Eremitage in Bayreuth stands in Bayreuth (Bayreuth), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Adult admission costs 6 EUR. Its opening hours and prices were verified at the source on September 22, 2026.
The Altes Schloss stands in the historic Eremitage park east of the St. Johannis district of Bayreuth, distinct from the Altes Schloss in the city centre. Built from 1715 as a pleasure house for Margrave Georg Wilhelm, it was later enlarged by Margravine Wilhelmine, who added rooms such as the Japanese Cabinet and the Mirror Shards Cabinet, where she wrote her memoirs. Its facade was deliberately kept looking like a ruin, a nod to the hermit's life the court act out by day before gathering in the ballroom each evening.
