To make a day of it

Motte Witzleshofen stands in Gefrees (Landkreis Bayreuth), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Motte Witzleshofen is what remains of a medieval motte, now largely swallowed by the modern village of Witzleshofen near Gefrees. No historical records document its original construction: the settlement itself is first named Witzleshofen only in 1363, and a 1509 mention refers to a dwelling and farmstead held as a fief by the lords of Wallenrod. Only a short stretch of earthen embankment from the former central mound survives above ground, the rest having been built over. This is a site of archaeological interest rather than a place for a standard visit.

What to know

  • No opening hours or fees apply, as this is an open outdoor site with no visitor facilities.
