Burg Stein stands on a wooded spur overlooking a bend of the Ölschnitz river, in the Stein district of the town of Gefrees. Of the former stronghold, only the Kemenate has survived largely intact: a three-storey building from the 14th century, now topped by a tall half-hip roof added in the 17th century. Its upper floors house the St Michael's chapel, fitted out in 1686. Around it, fragments of defensive walls, remains of the outer bailey and gatehouse area, and a gateway arch dated 1548 still trace the outline of the medieval complex.
