The Turmburg Alt-Berneck is an 11th-century ruin set on a wooded ridge above Bad Berneck im Fichtelgebirge. What remains today, a round keep, ditches and the outline of an outer bailey, came to light through excavations in the 1930s that uncovered one of the few known round towers from the Salian period. The site is freely accessible and appeals mainly to those curious about early medieval fortified residences predating the larger stone castles.
