To make a day of it
Lüningsburg stands in Neustadt am Rübenberge (Region Hannover), in Lower Saxony, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Lüningsburg is an early medieval earth and timber ring fortification located about two kilometres southeast of the town centre of Neustadt am Rübenberge in Lower Saxony. The roughly 135-metre-wide circular rampart stood on a terrace edge some five metres above the Leine valley and served as a refuge for the local population in times of danger rather than as a permanent settlement. Its remains, now split between a municipal cemetery and an adjoining field, are still visible as an earthen bank up to two metres high. There are no visitor facilities or signage; it is an open-air archaeological site reached on foot.
What to know
- The site can be visited freely at any time, with no entry fee, as it lies on open ground shared by a cemetery and a farmed field.
