The Lohrer Schloss stands at the northwest corner of the old town of Lohr am Main, on the site of a residential tower founded around 1340 by Count Gerhard V von Rieneck. After passing in 1559 to the Electors of Mainz, the building gradually took on its present form and served as residence for the electoral district administrators, including Philipp Christoph von und zu Erthal, whose two sons both later became prince-bishops. The Kingdom of Bavaria used it as an administrative seat from 1814 until 1972. The building now houses the Spessartmuseum, devoted to the history of the castle and of the surrounding Spessart forest region.
