Overlooking the confluence of the Saale and the Main, the ruins of Scherenburg rise on a hillside above Gemünden am Main. The Rieneck counts had it erected ahead of 1243 as a means of enforcing tolls along the river, and after passing to Würzburg in 1469 the fortress was renamed for Prince-Bishop Rudolf II von Scherenberg. Surviving elements include the gatehouse, a section of the shield wall, the round keep and a gable wall from the former hall, from which the Spessart hills and the two river valleys can be seen.
