To make a day of it

Leinburg (Kleingartach) stands in Kleingartach (Landkreis Heilbronn), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Leinburg, also known as Lüneburg or Luneburg, is a vanished hilltop castle that once stood atop the 307 metre Leinberg, northwest of Kleingartach, now part of Eppingen. Built around 1200 as the seat of the local noble family von Leinburg, it passed through several pledges between the Margraves of Baden and the Counts of Württemberg during the 14th century. Already recorded as ruined by 1442, the site today survives mainly as a location rather than as standing remains.

What to know

  • Almost nothing remains visible of the castle; only the hilltop site on the Leinberg can be identified.
  • Reaching the spot involves a climb to the top of the Leinberg with no tourist infrastructure.
  • There are no opening hours or admission fees since there is no building open to visitors.
  • The place suits a walk within the Stromberg-Heuchelberg nature park more than a heritage visit in the usual sense.
