To make a day of it

Jagdschlösschen stands in Bad Iburg (Landkreis Osnabrück), in Lower Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Jagdschlösschen stands at Bad Iburg, at the foot of the Schlossberg, within a pleasure garden laid out in the late 16th century by the Protestant prince-bishop of Osnabrück, Philipp Sigismund von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel. A half-timbered, two-storey building with a hipped roof, it has served many purposes over the centuries: hunting lodge, forester's house with a tavern after secularisation in 1803, and restaurant since its reopening in 2001. Its most notable feature is a set of twenty-four carved wooden figures beneath the roof eaves, attributed to the Osnabrück sculptor Adam Stenelt.

What to know

  • The building today houses a restaurant, so it is not visited as a museum in the usual sense.
  • The site is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Germany.
  • The facade is best appreciated from the surrounding garden at the foot of the Schlossberg.
  • The twenty-four carved figures beneath the roof eaves are worth looking up for on arrival.
