Haus Horst is a former fortified site in Hilden, in the Kreis Mettmann, North Rhine-Westphalia. Its origins go back to a moated castle built around 1250, standing on the old road between Cologne and the region, between Düsseldorf-Benrath and Hilden. For centuries the estate belonged to the knightly von der Horst family, and later, through marriage, to the Plettenberg, Quade and Schenk von Nideggen families. This last transfer triggered a prolonged inheritance dispute, known as the Horster Lehnstreit, which divided the heirs from 1592 to 1796.
