To make a day of it

Haus Buddenburg stands in Lünen (Kreis Unna), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Schloss Haus Buddenburg once stood in Lünen, in the Kreis Unna, North Rhine-Westphalia, on a site occupied by a stronghold as early as 1293. The building seen until the 20th century, a neoclassical mansion erected around 1845 for Baron August von Frydag, replaced several earlier structures held by the von Frydag family since the 14th century. Left to decay after the Second World War, it was demolished in 1977. Today, privet hedges planted along the outline of the old walls, together with the surviving paths of the park, mark where the building once stood.

What to know

  • The mansion itself no longer exists: it was torn down in 1977 after decades of neglect.
  • The ground plan of the former buildings can still be traced thanks to privet hedges planted along the old wall lines.
  • The paths of the former castle park remain walkable for a stroll.
  • No opening hours, fees or accessibility arrangements apply, as this is an open-air site with no building to visit.
  • The site lies in the Lippholthausen district of Lünen, near the former aluminium works that once occupied part of the estate.
