To make a day of it

Haus Bavier stands in Erkrath (Kreis Mettmann), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Haus Bavier can no longer be seen today: this former noble residence in Erkrath, built on wetland as a moated lowland castle, was torn down in the early 1960s to make way for urban development in the town centre. First recorded in 1147 as Erkerode, it changed names several times according to its successive owners, Schletz and then Buer, before becoming Bavier towards the end of the 16th century. Regarded as the historical nucleus of Erkrath, all that remains is a commemorative stone, the Bavierstein, set up in 1992 at the corner of Bavierstraße.

What to know

  • The building was completely demolished in 1962, so there is nothing left to visit on site.
  • Houses and shops now occupy the former grounds, around Gerberstraße, Bavierstraße and Bahnstraße.
  • Only a memorial stone, the Bavierstein, erected in 1992 at the corner of Bavierstraße, recalls the site's history.
  • There are no opening hours, fees or access arrangements since the historic structure itself no longer exists.
