To make a day of it

Hardheimer Schloss stands in Hardheim (Neckar-Odenwald-Kreis), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Hardheimer Schloss, also known as the Obere Burg, stands at the heart of the town of Hardheim and was built from 1561 for Wolf von Hardheim and his wife Margareta von Berlichingen, replacing an earlier moated stronghold first recorded in 1324. That older structure was looted during the Peasants' War but survived to be rebuilt into the present mansion. Its nearly square body is flanked by two sturdy corner towers topped with baroque domes, and the entrance portal bears the coats of arms of the original owners. The moat that once surrounded the building has long since been filled in and now forms a garden with a small pond.

What to know

  • The building currently serves as the town hall of Hardheim, so visits are limited to its exterior and surroundings.
  • The garden laid out in the former moat, with its small pond, can be explored freely.
  • There are no visiting hours or admission fees to plan for, as this is not a monument open to the public in the touristic sense.
  • The Schloss is listed as a Kulturdenkmal in Baden-Württemberg.
