To make a day of it

Burg Schweinberg stands in Hardheim (Neckar-Odenwald-Kreis), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Schweinberg stands in ruins above the village that bears its name, in Hardheim, on a shell-limestone spur that once overlooked a road linking Würzburg to the Main valley. What remains of the medieval stronghold is chiefly the truncated square keep, along with traces of a late artillery bastion and parts of the outer wall. It is a modest, open site rather than a fully restored monument, of interest mainly for its long and documented history.

What to know

  • The site is an open-air ruin, with no enclosed building to visit.
  • The keep, restored in 1974, can be seen from outside but is not part of any organised guided tour.
  • Access involves a climb up from the village of Schweinberg over uneven ground.
  • There are no set opening hours or admission fees, as the ruin is freely accessible.
  • The finest carved architectural fragments, such as the Romanesque double window, are not on site but kept in museums in Karlsruhe, Wertheim and Hardheim.
