Haldenburg stands in Schwabmünchen (Landkreis Augsburg), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Haldenburg is a vanished hilltop stronghold, of which only earthworks and ditches remain, on a wooded ridge southwest of Schwabegg, a district of Schwabmünchen. Built during the period when Hungarian horsemen threatened southern Germany in the 9th and 10th centuries, it served as a refuge for the local population and a military base. The site also preserves traces of much older occupation dating back to the Bronze Age, and can be explored today via a circular trail with information boards. Visitors can see the well preserved earthen ridges that once formed obstacles against mounted attackers approaching the outer bailey.

What to know

  • No buildings remain standing: the site consists of large earthworks to be explored on foot in the open air.
  • The main plateau is covered with dense young forest and largely inaccessible, only the extensive outer bailey can be freely visited.
  • A circular trail with information panels explains the layout of the site, including the former anti cavalry obstacles.
  • Access is via a forest path with some elevation change, sturdy footwear is advisable.
  • There are no set opening hours or admission fees, as the site is an open air monument.
