To make a day of it

Großer Schlichtenberg stands in Blekendorf (Kreis Plön), in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Großer Schlichtenberg refers to the remains of a moated earthwork castle near the Futterkamp estate, in the municipality of Blekendorf. Oval in shape and raised on a morainic ridge within the wetlands of the Mühlenau stream, it measured roughly 90 by 65 metres. A surrounding rampart about four metres high still survives, while the other ditches and banks that once protected the site can only be traced in the shape of the ground. Excavations carried out in 1976 showed that the timber structure dated to the 11th century and was later strengthened, remaining in use until the 15th century.

What to know

  • The site lies in open meadowland and can be visited freely.
  • No standing buildings remain, only an earthen rampart and traces of former ditches visible in the terrain.
  • The related Kleine Schlichtenberg site lies about 200 metres to the northwest.
  • As the ground is natural and unpaved, sturdy footwear is recommended for walking across the meadow.
  • No details are available regarding opening hours, admission fees or specific accessibility arrangements.
