To make a day of it
Georgium stands in Dessau-Roßlau (Dessau-Roßlau), in Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. Recorded dating: 18th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Georgium is an 18th century landscape park in Dessau-Roßlau, in Saxony-Anhalt, laid out from 1780 for Prince Johann Georg of Anhalt-Dessau. The neoclassical house that gives the estate its name, designed by architect Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff, now houses the Anhalt picture gallery, known for its old master paintings. The surrounding grounds form an English-style garden dotted with follies, artificial ruins and small temples, much like the neighbouring Wörlitzer Park. The whole site belongs to the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Realm, a UNESCO World Heritage property since 2000.
What to know
- The park can be explored freely and at no cost, while the Schloss itself gives access to a collection of old master paintings.
- The walk combines open landscape views with small structures such as an Ionic rotunda, antique-style arches, a Roman ruin and a monument to Prince Franz.
- The adjoining Beckerbruch wetland woodland extends the walk into a wilder stretch of terrain.
- The Schloss reopened in 2023 after a long restoration of its museum spaces.
- Given the size of the grounds, visitors should allow several hours to cover the whole area on foot.
