To make a day of it

Fischheimer Borstel stands in Seelitz (Landkreis Mittelsachsen), in Saxony, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Fischheimer Borstel, also known as Porstel, Borschel or Alter Wall, is a former Slavic hillfort set on a bluff above the Zwickauer Mulde river, near the hamlet of Fischheim. Used from the early into the beginning of the high medieval period, it consists of an earthwork with a double system of ramparts and ditches enclosing an oval area roughly 200 by 140 metres. No modern archaeological excavation has taken place there, though earlier, undocumented digs yielded fragments of Slavic and medieval pottery now held at the Schloss Rochlitz museum. Visitors come for the shape of the earthworks and the setting rather than any standing structure.

What to know

  • This is not a built castle but an earthwork hillfort, with no standing structures to see.
  • The site lies on a wooded hilltop above the Zwickauer Mulde river, near Fischheim.
  • No information is available regarding opening hours, fees or developed access.
  • Finds from the site are not displayed on location but kept at the Schloss Rochlitz museum.
  • Visiting mainly means tracing the ramparts and ditches in the landscape, so some walking on natural terrain should be expected.
