To make a day of it

Burgstall Wechselburg stands in Wechselburg (Landkreis Mittelsachsen), in Saxony, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Burgstall Wechselburg refers to the remains of a former hilltop fortification, variously described as Slavic or medieval, located between Wechselburg and Fischheim in Saxony. An earthen rampart roughly 50 by 70 metres across still traces the site's outline, open to the northwest where a steep slope above the Zwickauer Mulde river forms a natural barrier. No structures remain standing, but the spot now offers a viewpoint with a bench overlooking the Rochlitzer Berg and the Mulde valley. Narrow paths connect it to Wechselburg and to the nearby Fischheimer Borstel earthwork.

What to know

  • No standing structures remain, only the outline of an earthen rampart.
  • The site is reached on foot via narrow and sometimes steep paths.
  • A viewpoint with a bench offers views of the Rochlitzer Berg and the Mulde valley.
  • The visit is more of a forest walk than the exploration of a built monument.
  • The nearby Fischheimer Borstel, another ancient earthwork, can easily be combined with a visit here.
