The Darmstädter Schloss in Groß-Umstadt, also known as the Hanauer Schloss or Unterschloss, stands on the site of a former moated castle that grew over the centuries into a noble residence. Most of what can be seen today dates from a baroque rebuilding carried out between 1727 and 1747, which replaced the medieval structures with a three-wing complex arranged around a courtyard. A stretch of the old town wall, roughly seventy metres long, still runs along the northern edge of the site. Only the north and south wings survive today, restored since the mid-20th century.
