Burgstall Hammel refers to the earthwork remains of a vanished medieval stronghold, set on a wooded hill above the hamlet of Hammel, part of Neusäß. No standing structure survives, but the ramparts, ditches and banks of the former fortification can still be traced across the ground. The hill first carried a stronghold of a knightly family known as 'de Hamel', and briefly, in the twelfth century, housed a community of Augustinian canons. Visitors come here for a landscape reading rather than a building, following mounds, trenches and a fortified plateau.
