To make a day of it

Burgruine Zengenberg an der Hainleite stands in Bleicherode (Landkreis Nordhausen), in Thuringia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Burgruine Zengenberg an der Hainleite sits on a rocky spur above the village of Wernrode, part of Bleicherode, within the Hainleite range. There is nothing monumental to see here: no masonry has survived, only an earthen rampart and a curved ditch that still trace the triangular outline of the former stronghold. Built in the 11th century by the Thuringian noble family von Zenge, it once guarded the trade route between Mühlhausen and Nordhausen and secured the nearby villages of Wernrode and Wolkramshausen. It was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War.

What to know

  • No walls remain on site, only earthworks such as a ditch and a curved rampart mark the former castle's outline.
  • Reaching the site involves a woodland walk on the Hainleite ridge, with no visitor infrastructure known.
  • There are no set opening hours or fees, as the site is an open-air location.
  • Nearby ruins (Schloss Wernrode, Burgruine Kirchberg, Wöbelsburg) make it a good stop on a longer hike.
  • Sturdy footwear is advisable given the wooded, sloping terrain of the spur.
