The Burgruine Weisswasserstelz stands on a 340 metre hill on the north bank of the Rhine, near Hohentengen am Hochrhein. Built from the 11th century onward by the Wasserstelz family, ministerials of the Reichenau Abbey, it formed together with the nearby strongholds of Schwarzwasserstelz and Rotwasserstelz a chain controlling river traffic and the crossing at Kaiserstuhl. Its ruins reflect a long line of noble owners, from the Wasserstelz to the Heggenzer of Schaffhausen, before being partly destroyed during the Thirty Years' War.
