Burgruine Sommerau stands in Sommerau (Landkreis Trier-Saarburg), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 12th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Burgruine Sommerau stands on a rocky spur almost surrounded by the Ruwer river, above the village of Sommerau. Built in the 13th century by the knightly family von der Brücke, it still shows the remains of the residential hall and of a square keep roughly fifteen metres high, originally reached through a raised door via a wooden fighting walk. A notable feature is that the rock of the spur was pierced at its narrowest point to drive a mill with the river's water, which created the small Sommerau waterfall. A thorough restoration carried out at the end of the 1970s stabilised the masonry that can still be seen today.
