To make a day of it

Burgruine Schauenforst stands in Uhlstädt-Kirchhasel (Landkreis Saalfeld-Rudolstadt), in Thuringia, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Burgruine Schauenforst crowns the narrow ridge of the Schlossberg near Rödelwitz, a site so elongated that in places it measures only a few meters across. A sturdy round tower still stands in relatively good condition, together with the remains of the residential hall built over vaulted cellars, the best preserved section of the complex. Surviving ditches and traces of outlying defenses hint at the original layout, including an outer bailey in the northwest once separated from the main castle by a drawbridge.

What to know

  • The site sits on a long, narrow ridge, so visitors should watch their footing along the way.
  • The main approach is from the north, as the other sides of the hill are naturally steeper and harder to access.
  • This is an open ruin with no known opening hours or admission fees.
  • A visit mainly involves walking around the remains of the tower and the former hall.
