To make a day of it

Burgruine Hohenburg (Hohenfels) stands in Hohenfels (Landkreis Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Burgruine Hohenburg is a ruined noble castle erected before the year 1000 by the margraves of Hohenburg, members of the Diepoldinger family, to guard a medieval trade route running from the lower Elbe to Regensburg via Forchheim. Set on the rocky Schloßberg summit above the Lauterach valley, it still shows a square keep with a round inner chamber, remnants of a hall faced with limestone ashlar, and wall fragments visible from the valley floor. The site now lies within the US Army's Hohenfels training area, which makes visiting it impossible.

What to know

  • The site lies within the US Army's Hohenfels training area and cannot be visited.
  • The ruins stand on the Schloßberg about 10.5 km north-northwest of central Hohenfels and can only be glimpsed from a distance, from the Lauterach valley.
  • There are no opening hours, fees, or visitor facilities since the site is not open to the public.
  • The castle is listed as a Baudenkmal in Bavaria, though this designation does not affect the access restriction.
