To make a day of it
Burgruine Velburg stands in Velburg (Landkreis Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 12th century. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
The Burgruine Velburg crowns a rocky outcrop above the town of Velburg in the Upper Palatinate region of Bavaria. Founded around 1100 and first recorded in 1129, it was the seat of the lords and later counts of Velburg before passing to the Wittelsbach dukes, being largely destroyed by fire in the fifteenth century, and finally ruined during the Thirty Years' War. Of the once triangular fortress only stretches of wall and a rebuilt keep remain, its top now open as a viewpoint over the limestone hills of the Franconian Jura.
What to know
- The site is reached on foot from Velburg via an old lime tree avenue winding up in switchbacks, on the König-Otto-Schlaufe trail of the Jurasteig.

- The ground is rocky and steep, set among dry grassland and beech woods typical of the local Jura landscape.

- The site lies within a protected landscape area and a Natura 2000 zone covering several limestone hills.
