To make a day of it

Burgruine Wolfstein stands in Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz (Landkreis Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Admission is free. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Burgruine Wolfstein crowns the summit of the Wolfsteinberg above Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz. Built in the 12th century by the noble family that gave it its name, it was once a powerful seat of lordship before passing to the Palatine counts of Neumarkt and falling into ruin by the 17th century. Excavations carried out since the mid 1990s have uncovered the ground floor of the main keep, a well, several vaults and the former Chapel of St Mary. Its 22 metre high tower still overlooks the town and the Neumarkt basin.

What to know

  • The site can be visited all year round, though excavation and restoration work may limit access to some areas.
  • The 22 metre keep can only be climbed during guided tours offered on summer Sundays by the Wolfsteinfreunde association.
  • Reaching the summit of the Wolfsteinberg requires some physical effort, as the ruin is not accessible on the flat.
  • The ruin adjoins a former outer bailey where two houses are still inhabited today.
  • No fixed prices or opening hours are given for visiting the ruin on one's own.
