To make a day of it

Burgruine Dalberg stands in Dalberg (Landkreis Bad Kreuznach), in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Burgruine Dalberg stands on a rocky spur above the village of Dalberg, overlooking the Gräfenbach valley. Built between 1150 and 1170 for Godebold von Weyersbach, it became the seat of the von Dalberg family before being given up in favour of the more comfortable Schloss Wallhausen in the sixteenth century. Visitors today can make out the remains of the Romanesque keep, the fortified residential tower, the former Antoniuskapelle and the Dietherbau wing, along with substantial stretches of the outer wall. The ruin, under restoration since 2019, lies directly on the Hildegard von Bingen pilgrim trail.

What to know

  • The ruin is an open-air site reached on foot from the village of Dalberg, along a marked hiking trail.
  • Restoration works have been ongoing in phases since 2019, so some parts of the ruin may be closed off at times.
  • The path up to the ruin is uphill, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
  • There are no visitor facilities such as a shop or café on site, as it is an open monument.
  • The local heritage association, Freunde der Dalburg, holds an annual festival with guided tours on Germany's Open Monument Day.
