Burg Westerhof stands in the municipality of Kalefeld, in Lower Saxony, on a site first referenced in written sources at the end of the 12th century, when a certain Conradus de Westerhoue is named. The fortress itself is documented from 1294 onward, at a time when it was divided among several noble families and the bishopric of Hildesheim. Its history is one of sales, pledges and successive partitions among local lords, until it passed to the Duchy of Brunswick-Lüneburg in 1523. The manor building, destroyed by fire in the 16th century, was rebuilt and later served as an administrative seat until the mid-19th century.
