To make a day of it
Burg Wachenbuchen stands in Wachenbuchen (Main-Kinzig-Kreis), in Hesse, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.
Burg Wachenbuchen is a medieval motte, now reduced to ruins, located near Wachenbuchen in the Main-Kinzig-Kreis district of Hesse. What remains is a flattened earth mound, the base of a former tower keep that once overlooked an outer bailey, both now covered by a small stand of trees in a damp meadow. Its connection to the von Buchen family, possibly ancestors of the House of Hanau, is still debated among historians. This is a site for those drawn to field archaeology rather than a restored building.
What to know
- No standing structure remains, only a flattened mound and traces of a moat in a damp meadow.
- The site lies roughly 600 metres southeast of the village of Wachenbuchen, off any maintained path.
- The often wet, uneven ground means the location is not suited to limited mobility.
- There are no set opening hours or admission fees, as this is an open natural site.
- Tree cover on the mound makes the remains harder to read, particularly in summer.
