Burg Windecken rises above the old town of Nidderau, on a spur overlooking the Nidder river, in the Main-Kinzig-Kreis in Hesse. Built from around 1260 by the lords, later counts, of Hanau, it served as a secondary residence and as a dower seat before being devastated during the Thirty Years' War. What remains today are two 16th-century gate towers, one still bearing the coat of arms of the counts of Hanau, along with sections of the surrounding wall and administrative buildings from the 18th century.
