To make a day of it

Burg Vestenberg stands in Petersaurach (Landkreis Ansbach), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Vestenberg is the ruin of a medieval hilltop castle above the village of Vestenberg, part of the municipality of Petersaurach. Built in the 12th century, it was never home to the knightly family whose name it bears, who most likely resided in the neighbouring settlement, while the castle itself was probably founded by a different noble house. Only fragments of rubble-stone walls and some cellar remains, partly inaccessible, survive today, with the parish church now standing over part of the former castle grounds. A restored garden below the ruin hosts an open-air cultural festival each late summer.

What to know

  • The site consists only of ruined wall fragments and cellars, some of which are not accessible, with no standing building to visit.
  • Part of the former castle grounds now lies beneath the village's St. Laurentius church.
  • The restored castle garden below the ruin hosts an open-air cultural festival every late summer.
  • No opening hours, admission fees or accessibility arrangements are documented, so visits are generally made freely from outside the site.
