Burg Vellinghausen stands in the hamlet of the same name within the municipality of Welver, a lowland castle typical of the flat Westphalian countryside. It was built around 1300 on the initiative of Rötger von Galen, likely on the site of an earlier stronghold. Later centuries added a Renaissance fireplace on the ground floor and reshaped the east facade in baroque style, with an entrance portal bearing the builders' combined coat of arms.
