Haus Assen is a moated castle built in the Renaissance style typical of the Lippe region, in the municipality of Lippetal. Its origins go back to a medieval stronghold already recorded in the eleventh century, before a new Renaissance residence was erected in the sixteenth century and later joined to the older structure. The von Galen family owned the estate from 1653 until 1997, when it was donated to a religious community. Visitors can see the characteristic architecture of a Westphalian moated house, along with a neo-Gothic chapel added in the nineteenth century.
